French Galilean Binoculars and Leather Case by Iris de Paris c.1880

This is an original pair of French Galilean binoculars manufactured by Iris de Paris, France. They are marked on each eyepiece with "Iris Paris". The objective lenses are 40mm in diameter and their optics are good. The frame is a chrome coated metal and the barrels are covered with tan enamel. One barrel is indented slightly. The black metal focus wheel works well. The carrying case is an embossed brown leather and the leather has hardened with age. Overall the piece is in good condition with appropriate patina for its age.

HISTORY

Iris de Paris were a prominent manufacturer alongside the French Lemaire Fabt over the turn of the century. They themed a number of their sporting binocular sets and you will find such examples as an eagle (touring), Car ( auto), sail boat (yatching), anchor (nautique), racing horse (racing), rowing team ( regatta ).
