Metal Industrial Iron Basket c.1920-1930
This is an original painted iron basket from the early 20th century. It is an industrial piece, possibly from a foundry, that has been handmade by wrapping pieces of iron around the frame and riveting them together. The original paint finish has the appropriate distressed patina for its age, and the piece is structurally in excellent condition.

The basket is one of humankind's oldest art forms, and prior to its invention people used tree bark to make simple containers. The basket is an ethnic and cultural icon that is filled with symbolism. The single most famous basket may well have been the one made of bulrushes and mud in which baby Moses floated to safety.
