ABOUT

An original leather trunk by D.S. Martin & Co. San Francisco with a fabric storage interior. The trunk is made entirely of leather with steel and brass brackets on the sides and brass rivets over the body. The leather is embossed on the sides and the top with the maker's company name. The large brass lock on the front has a swivel cover for the key hole and patent dates stamped on it. The piece has retained its original finish and is in good condition with appropriate patina for its age. The leather handles are missing, part of the lock is broken and there is minor splitting of the leather denoted in photos.

HISTORY

A factory owned by C.A. Malm manufactured trunks and traveling bags at 234 Bush Street in San Francisco. The factory was founded in 1863 by D.S. Martin & Co.. Mr. Malm became the sole proprietor in 1882. The factory employed many workers and could fill order upon short notice. The trunks were manufactured with the best materials and put together solidly "in first class workmanlike manner".
