Several years later, when he was refused a raise, Dunlap left to start his own business. Thus began the famed Dunlap hat company.

By the late 1890's Dunlap Hats were known for their high end top hats and bowlers which eventually outsold the Knox in Manhattan. For many years small hat-makers held up their spring lines until they could imitate the Dunlap derby. However, the demand for the style declined in the twentieth century and by 1918 Dunlap was acquired by Knox, though hats under the Dunlap name continued to be produced.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0018/9425/2633/products/dunlap-and-co-beaver-skin-top-hat-and-leather-hat-box-by-collins-and-fairbanks-england-1.jpg?v=1539222138
copy-of-antique-full-head-wooden-hat-mold-c-1860-1922
Antique German Personalized Hat Form c.1920

ABOUT

An original German 1920's wooden wig maker's block/form used in a New York wig studio with the original hairline patterns and name of the client.

CREATOR Unknown.

DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1920s.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Wood.

CONDITION Good. They are usually carved from wood, but you can also find aluminum and poly blocks.

Hat blocks have been used in men's hat-making for over 200 years.Early hat blocks were made from wood turned on a lathe, making them perfectly round, which was fine if the hat was to be placed over a wig. However, this changed in the early 1800s when wigs began to fall out of fashion. Hats now needed to fit to the true shape of their wearers' heads, so block-makers began carving their hat blocks by hand in a more oval shape.This opened up new possibilities for the shaping of hats. Soon there were many different styles in use, which changed and developed over the years.Hat blocks can be made from a single wood block or from several separate pieces which can be assembled in various ways to achieve different effects. These are sometimes known as 'puzzle blocks'.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0018/9425/2633/products/milinery-new-york-wig-studio-1920s-2.jpg?v=1570235743
firemans-helmet-c-1940
Fireman's Helmet c.1940

ABOUT

An authentic distressed red and white fireman's helmet.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0018/9425/2633/files/antique-wooden-hat-stretcher-circa-1890-1920-4.jpg?v=1695943491
late-19th-early-20th-c-european-millinery-hat-stretcher-c-1921
Late 19th/Early 20th c. They are usually carved from wood, but you can also find aluminum and poly blocks.

Hat blocks have been used in men's hat-making for over 200 years. Early hat blocks were made from wood turned on a lathe, making them perfectly round, which was fine if the hat was to be placed over a wig.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0018/9425/2633/collections/s16-home-antique-post-office-desk-firemans-hat-2.jpg?v=1582414232
