Each section of the foot is labeled and named in Latin such as "Cuboid", "Metatarsus" and "Proximal Phalanx". The material is very light and possibly paper machete. This unique piece retains its original finish and the Latin labels are very clear. The condition is good with minimal wear consistent with age and use. There are two breaks on the 2nd and 3rd bones that may be intentional to demonstrate a real break to a human foot bone.

CREATOR Unknown.

DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1810

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Possibly Paper Machete.

CONDITION Good. It found great use in the 19th century in protecting foreign plants imported to Europe from overseas, the great majority of which had previously died from exposure during long sea journeys, frustrating the many scientific and amateur botanists of the time. The Wardian case was the direct forerunner of the modern terrarium and the inspiration for the glass aquarium.
