HISTORY

Armor Bronze started as The National Metalizing Company in 1910 with their studio and showroom in New York City and their main office and factory in Garwood, New Jersey. Around 1920 they became the Armor Bronze Company and made bookends, doorstops, art objects, table and floor lamps. The company moved to Taunton Massachusetts in the mid-1930’s, with production ceasing around 1948.

Their finishes utilized ancient Egyptian and Chinese processes to color bronze, namely the Polychrome method. They also used the Sgraffito process, a hand etching method that allowed each layer of color to shine through. A catalogue at the Smithsonian shows that the bookends sold for between $5 and $16 each.
