Date: circa 1950s. Although no date is inscribed on the piece, the type of illustration board used-1/8" think W & R Ralson Ltd., faced with hard sized, cold pressed, Whatman drawing paper- is consistent with a 1950 to 1960 time frame.

Vivyan Seward was born in Northwood, England in 1902 and emigrated to the United States as a child. He studied at the Art Institue of Chicago and subsequently moved to the Los Angeles area. Later, he moved to San Francisco, where he established a commercial art studio, first at 216 Market Street (in 1952) and later at 316 Bush St. A more extensive biography of Vivyan Seward can be found in Edan Hughes' "Artists in California, 1786-1940".
