Antique Galvanized Steel "Witt No. 2" Waste Can c.1910

All original and completely intact early 20th century antique American vintage industrial outdoor trash can with original handled lid. The robust waste can is comprised of heavy gauge galvanized steel with riveted joint reinforcement. It retains the original opposed bent steel drop handles fastened tightly to the can.  The fluted or ribbed design is found along the cylindrical body. The brightly colored blue and white diamond logo is intact with slight fading.

HISTORY

In 1887, The Witt Cornice Tin/Slate Roofing Company was founded by George C. Witt near the banks of the Ohio River in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1899, George Witt patented the Witt corrugated ash can, shortened the company name to The Witt Cornice Company, and manufactured his first can.

This waste can was salvaged from a hardware store in the Mission District of San Francisco. The hardware store operated from the 1920s and closed in 2018.
